TV host Phoemela Barranda thinks it's not a crime for celebrities to wear the same clothes more than once in public appearances.

“Nag-uulit din kami ng clothes, we just style it,” said she who appears on TV almost everyday via “TV Patrol World” (Monday to Friday) and “The Buzz” (Sunday).

Styling, she added, spells the difference.

“I know how to style myself. I avoid wearing the same way outfit, twice. I mix and match [clothes] and I wear model accessories to update my outfit.

“[It’s] very, very important to have a set of simple womens clothing that you can play around with,” she shared.

Phoem, who started out as a ramp and commercial model said she does not allow trends to dictate her fashion choices.

“Fashion is an expression of individuality. You don’t always have to follow trends, but about you making a statement.”

The TV host knows this only too well having been a fashion victim in the past.

“Talagang all my money was spent on clothes, accessories, but now I know better.”

The Star Patroller said she knows how to dress for the occasion, but more so, how to "dress for the recession."

“You don't have to sacrifice your look during hard times. Local retail stores are already updated with what’s in and many of their products are comparable to imported womens clothing brands. I even go to Tutuban to hunt for fashion finds!” she shared.

This is the reason Phoem is happy to have been picked as endorser for local fashion brand, Get Laud.

“Get Laud clothes are really elegant, nice, and very affordable,” said beauty face Phoem who was announced as Get Laud brand endorser via a fashion show held at 9501 in ABS-CBN on Nov. 18.

The clothing brand also launched its new collection, which is mostly comprised by drapes, jump suits, lines, and ruffles.

“Get Laud has very unique designs and a wide variety of style you can choose from. You can go for casual chic to elegantly stylish, from vibrant colors and prints to toned-down earth colors.

Geraldine Laudencia, owner of Get Laud, well, lauds beauty face Phoem for being the perfect endorser of the brand.

“While the bigger brands get leading ladies as their endorser, we want someone who’s really versatile… isang host na web fashion like Phoem,” she said.

Geraldine clarified that their previous endorser, Roxanne Guinoo, who graced web fashion brand’s interiors and billboards for two years, helped forward the brand to where it is nowadays.

Fresh off a flight from New York, flamboyant designer Richie Rich is about to begin fitting models at the night club this Is London. But first, a drink. “We call this clown juice,” he says gleefully, accepting a glass of champagne.

The “we” refers to former Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson, Richie's long-time BFF and now his collaborator on a new clothing line called A*MUSE, which was presented at a private event in Toronto last Thursday during fashion week.

As one half of the former cult hit label Heatherette, Richie is sure to apply a similar high-octane eccentricity to this collection, which he describes as “Malibu meets Andy Warhol.” He says Anderson with her beauty care tips will remain an inspiration for the line but that together the duo plans to use a different sexy woman as a muse each season.

This means that Anderson, the buxom mother of two from Ladysmith, B.C., ostensibly becomes Canada's first celebrity fashion designer – and an eco-conscious one at that.

Rich confirms that his friend has played an active role in A*MUSE. The street- and swimwear line for men and women includes organic-cotton printed tees, hoodies and leggings, many screen-printed with an image of Pammy with her beauty care posing provocatively with Rich on roller skates. The pieces have yet to hit stores, but will be priced on par with the offerings of H&M and Urban Outfitters. There are also some additional ready-to-wear styles – a magenta lamé-and-tulle party frock, a spray-painted smocked and ruffled romper, a bedazzled men's bikini – that will be produced in limited quantities.

“Even if it's just a T-shirt, we want it to be a statement,” says Rich, whose travel ensemble consists of four-inch Calvin Klein women's boots in night club harem pants, an Alexander McQueen T-shirt, glitter eyeliner and his signature newsboy cap.

It's easy to see why these two get along. Rich, who skated with the Ice Capades at 18 before moving to New York and becoming a professional club kid, lets out a “wheeee!” when he gets excited. Anderson, who joins him for an afternoon of interviews the following day, is the ultimate glitter internet models girl; her heaving bosom – modestly displayed in a V-neck grey sweater dress – is covered in a thick green-ish layer of it. They are entrepreneurial in practice but kids at heart.

“Every time we stay in a hotel, we leave a trail of glitter out the door,” says Anderson, who is sitting next to Dan Matthews, vice-president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Long associated with the organization, she is also starring in its latest multimedia campaign.

The cross-promotion is intentional. For all the titillating sound bites she provides – “I like to feel naked like many internet models most of the time” – the actress wants the world to know that A*MUSE has been altruistically designed.

Rich, who jokingly calls Anderson “Canada's national treasure chest,” sees the line expanding to include a PETA-approved fragrance, limited-edition sneakers and even a surfboard. “I think that in 25 years [the line] will be a collector's item,” he says. “I don't know if we'll still be walking down the runway with it, but I think it will definitely be a piece of some type of fun pop-culture history.”

In the meantime, he admits that his pal has taught him to rethink his own relationship with animal products, although he has yet to make too many sacrifices. “I'm just happy champagne is vegan.”

SHE may be the crown princess of the surf world, but Kingscliff surfer Stephanie Gilmore is still just a regular 21-year-old woman.

The two-time world titleholder made it home to the Tweed and Gold Coast this week on a bit of a busman's holiday before heading back overseas.

She has combined with Priceline, the discount beauty chain, to present a one-hour beauty workshop at selected fashion stores across the country and, of course, she had to come home.

So last week Steph held court at the Pacific Fair store, and with help of a team of make-up artists she was helping beauty care shoppers create the “Active Girl” look - and picking up a few tips of her own!

“Basically even though I have the adventure of being a professional surfer, I still love to look my best,” she said.

“I love beauty and fashion so I'm doing some work travelling around and learning about quick make-up tricks.”

As a professional surfer out in the elements a lot, sun damage would almost be an occupational health hazard - so sunscreen and moisturising beauty care cream would be almost as important as wetsuits and surfboards?

“That is one of the things with my profession!” she agreed.

“As much as I love the sun it is pretty evil - you really have to look after your skin and hair.”

And so other than watching out for sun damage, is being a world-class surfer everything that the Kingscliff High School girl used to dream about only a handful of years ago?

“It's better than I thought!” she gushed

“It's everything I hoped for, and then I get time off to travel.”

"Hair is really a big motivator for women," said Nicole Stagg, a curly-haired brunette and Hearst Digital Media's director of content strategy. She was on the phone with the Observer after Hearst Corp's Monday announcement that the publisher of Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and Harper's Bazaar would launch a new digital venture called RealBeauty.

An early version of the site, meant to be a one-stop destination for women looking for hair, makeup and beauty recommendations and products for young wanna be model girls will launch in September probably at the end of the month, Ms. Stagg told the Observer.

Ms. Stagg said hair and beauty tips are among women's top searches on the Web, and after surveying girls readers from "age 17 to Good Housekeeping," Hearst has been working on the site for the past year and a half.

Ladies will get news on which products will relax fall frizz and whether black is still the "it" nail color via articles roped in from Hearst magazines, commissioned content and other pieces specifically for women beauty tips of color from partnering publishers, including Latina Magazine and Hype Hair Magazine, that "have expertise we just don't have access to," Ms. Stagg said.

But it won't be all lipsticks and skin cremes, according to Ms. Stagg. "We know that beauty isn't just cosmetic," she said, hence the title RealBeauty. The site will offer wellness and health information, from diet and nutrition advice beauty tips with stress relief and getting a good night's rest. "Everybody knows you can't look beautiful when you haven't gotten enough sleep," she said. "I often say that I feel my ugliest when I've pigged out on cookies the night before."

An official launch in November will bring a feature that Hearst thinks will differentiate them from their competition with many model agencies like fashion blog giant Glam Media and e-commerce sites.

It's called the "The Beauty Book," a toolbar that will hover at the bottom of the site and give users recommended beauty and wellness tips based on their personal profile. Users answer questions about their age ethnicity any latest model agencies hair color, product preferences. Hearst, as well as advertisers, give them more honed recommendations in return.

"I have curly hair so what works for me isn't going to work for a woman with straight hair," she said. Her Beauty Book will probably have more product reviews of curl relaxers or de-frizzing products, for example, and nix the tips for women with perfectly blown-out straight locks.

Ms. Stagg also revealed to the Observer that the site will launch more social networking featueres in early 2010. They'll be called "Beauty Circles" and users will join predetermined groups like, say, "The Curly Hair Circle," as well as ones they can create themselves (Perhaps a "Reporters Circle," we wonder?) and pass around tips and share hair cut ideas.

Ms. Stagg, the former senior editor of Rodale Interactive, will have an "editor in chief-like role" on the site, editing articles and honing its authoritative but "chatty" voice. She joined Hearst in 2006 and launched their food and recipies site, Delish, last year. She is familiar with women's beauty sites after spending more than seven years at top ladies destination iVillage and overseeing its eCommerce channels. In 2000, she spearheaded the $200 million joint venture between iVillage and Unilever, the manufacturer of products from Dove soap to Ben & Jerry's ice cream, to launch a new beauty site.

So how has beauty changed over the years? "The searches are still enormous and that has not changed," she said. The teens were into celebrity news and hair. Older women, the Good Housekeepers, were more about health for young male models and nutrition. Now the gap is closing. "I've definitely seen much more of a wellness side as it relates to beauty," Ms. Stagg said. "Their attitudes about their hair, skin and makeup were equally important to taking care of their bodies and their well being. There wasn't really that much of a gap between the ages." Looks like 14 is the new 40--and vice versa.

FOR five seasons the models of “Project Runway” were expected to keep quiet and walk the walk. This time around they’re being asked to talk the talk.

Appearing on a new cable network (Lifetime) and being filmed at a new location (the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles) the new season of “Project Runway” still pits designers in an elimination competition, but it has expanded its roster of telegenic infighters to include the sexy model who showcase the clothes.Once an afterthought, the models are now supporting players, selected not only for their spidery limbs and doe eyes but also for their ability to interact with their designers. And for viewers who want yet more, the models are appearing in their own spinoff, “Models of the Runway,” which is scheduled on Thursday nights directly after “Project Runway.”

It follows 16 women with names like Emarie, Kojii, Matar and Yosuzi as they squeeze into a loft in downtown Los Angeles, endure a shortage of bathrooms and partake in the kind of squabbling familiar to viewers of “America’s Next Top Model” and “Make Me a Supermodel.”

As a designer is eliminated, so is the model assigned to him or her. The goal is to be the last model standing alongside the winning designer after sexy model Heidi Klum has uttered her final “auf” on “Project Runway.” The model’s take: $25,000 from L’Oreal Skin Genesis and a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.

The living arrangements and prize packages are standard fare in the other model-centric series, but producers claim that that is where the similarities end.

“Our models are already working,” said Sara Rea, an executive producer of “Models of the Runway.” “They already have contracts. This is about what it’s like to see working on beauty care models in the real fashion world, not women who are just starting out and trying to get signed.” (Winners of “Top Model,” on CW, and “Supermodel,” on Bravo, are awarded $100,000, management contracts and magazine layouts.)

Filmed as a backstage companion to “Project Runway,” “Models of the Runway” focuses on the symbiosis between designer and web model. Producers say that it also addresses a curiosity about the beauty care tips by models that “Project Runway” viewers had expressed through e-mail messages and chat rooms.

“Heidi says in ‘Project Runway’ that a model can make or break a look,” Ms. Rea said. “You might see a design that’s not so good but is saved on the runway, or one that is good but is taken down by the model who’s wearing it.”

Tanisha Harper, a “Project Runway” model who has worked for the photographer Patrick Demarchelier and the designers Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, saw her role, both on the show of beautiful web models and in real life, as a kind of muse. “You give them that inspiration — the ‘that’s my girl’ thing that can mold their collection for the next season, or that may change their perspective of how they design that dress,” she said. “We give them their extra little oomph.”

Christopher Straub, a current contestant on “Project Runway,” said that he doesn’t rely on his model for inspiration — he already has his own muse in Victoria Beckham — but did admit that the web models can be the final element in the designer’s success.

“For me it’s a very important relationship because you can make the prettiest design or the ugliest design, but it all comes down to how it’s presented,” he said. “That model has to be your best friend because she’s going to be the one who’s selling it.”

Over time, he said, some were christened “death models” by the contestants. “The word was, ‘Don’t go with her,’ “ Mr. Straub said of one.

And has the emphasis on hearing more from the models been helpful? “For the first time they were sharing the spotlight, and I think they felt they had the ability to control the designs available if search blog is done for more designs a little bit more than in the past,” Mr. Straub said. “There were definitely times when the designers would get frustrated with the feedback.”

She’s 43 and a mum-of-two, but Cindy Crawford showed off the body of a woman half her age on holiday in France last week. We asked her long-time trainer, Valerie Waters, to find out how she does it…
Ever since she burst onto the super model scene in the 90s, Cindy Crawford has had the perfect mix of slim and curvy

But unlike some stars who claim their perfect bodies are down to running after their kids or, even more unbelievably, a magical metabolism, Cindy the beauty face isn’t afraid to admit hers is mostly due to discipline.

Here, her long-time trainer Valerie Waters (who also works with Kate Beckinsale and other A-listers), reveals her secrets for keeping in shape...

Eat little and often

“Cindy says it’s important to eat small meals throughout the day so you’re never hungry,” says Valerie. Cindy the beauty face snacks between breakfast and lunch so she’s not hungry when she’s ready to eat.”

She tucks into five small meals a day, which keeps her metabolism revved up and also keeps hunger pangs at bay. Cindy herself says: ‘You have to eat regularly to maintain your energy levels important for models involved in web modeling If you starve your body it will simply store everything that you do eat.’”

Why this works

Studies show your metabolism peaks when you eat five or so small meals a day, rather than three big ones. Breakfast is the most important of those (Cindy never skips it) and it should also be your biggest meal.

Crash dieting, or going for too long without food, causes your metabolism to slow down and can also encourage you to binge on fatty or sugary foods.

Experts suggest never going for more than three hours without a small healthy meal or snack.

Drink lots of water

“Cindy makes sure she drinks plenty of water,” says Valerie. “I personally try to drink at least three litres a day. In fact, one of the tips to web modeling girls by Cindy is tops tips is: ‘Drink lots of water, find a form of exercise you enjoy and don’t smoke.’”

Why this works

“If you reduce toxins like caffeine, alcohol and sugar your body burns fat faster.”

Aim for two or three litres of still water a day – this shouldn’t include sparkling water because it can make you bloated, but can include herbal teas such as peppermint (which isn’t bloating) or green tea (which helps burn fat).

Be portion smart

Valerie has always advised Cindy to fill half her lunch plate with vegetables or salad, a quarter with lean protein (such as eggs, chicken, fish, shellfish or red meat) and the remaining quarter with brown carbs (such as brown rice, pasta or bread).

At dinner time she suggests leaving the carbs out altogether. Cindy says: “I watch the carbs a bit more these days but I don’t cut them out.”

Why this works

Many fad diets suggest cutting out carbs altogether, but most nutritionists argue that they are a vital part of a healthy diet and provide fibre. However, while it’s important to include carbs in your diet studies show that cutting back on them slightly helps weight loss.

Try having one carb-free meal a day, but make sure you include them for the other two. Healthy choices include wholegrain bread, wholemeal pasta and rice. Fruit and vegetables are also a great source of fibre and should be eaten every day.

Treat yourself

Valerie lets her clients cheat, as long as they don’t do it too often: “Cindy can have a slice of pizza or a glass of wine without feeling guilty because she never goes too far off track,” says Valerie.

However, she only indulges once in a while and recently said: “When we go to fast-food restaurants, my kids always say: ‘Aren’t you hungry, mummy?’ But I look at the fries and think it’s just not worth it.”

Why this works

Allowing yourself the odd treat keeps you on track, according to studies. If you restrict yourself the whole time you’re more likely to fall off the wagon. But if you give yourself something to look forward to like pizza, wine or ice-cream night every Friday, then dieting for the rest of the week won’t seem such a chore.
Eat simple food

Valerie insists her clients stick mostly to foods that are whole and natural such as chicken, fish, fresh vegetables, fruits and nuts.

“Meals today are so full of ingredients that didn’t exist 50 years ago,” she says.

“If you don’t recognise one of the ingredients in a food product, then chances are it’s too processed and is best avoided.”

Why this works

Whole foods contain more nutrients than heavily processed foods, and the more nutrients a food has the fuller it keeps you. Stick to foods with only a handful of ingredients. If you don’t recognise one of them, leave on the shelf.

Mix up your exercise

Cindy never sticks to just one form of exercise. She runs inside and outside, lifts weights and does yoga one can get more information through blogging and Pilates. “You burn more calories that way,” says Valerie.

She’s also a fan of interval training, where you switch between a fast and slow pace. Interval walking or running is best, where you run fast for around 30 seconds then jog slowly for 20 seconds.

Young Male Model Actors Modeling

Ashton Kutcher is the model of success in Hollywood. But the movie star and TV producer wishes he never had to endure the boredom of being a model.

The producer of “Punk’d” and other reality series is venturing into drama this season by producing a CW series set inside the world of modeling “The Beautiful Life.”

Modeling is where it all began for Kutcher, who was discovered while he was studying engineering at the University of Iowa.

“It was finals, and I was 19, and somehow I managed get into a bar, and somehow I managed to get a beer,” Kutcher the hunk modeling told the nation’s television critics in Pasadena, Calif. Soon, he was asked his age by an agent. “She said, ‘You should be a model.’ And I said, ‘Do guys even do that?’”

The modeling opportunity came two weeks after he was overwhelmed with school and determined to get out of Iowa.

“So when an opportunity came up to have a vehicle to sort of get out of Dodge, I jumped on it,” said Kutcher. “I won a trip to New York City. I went to New York and called home and just said, ‘I’m not coming home.’ ”

In his first week, he got booked on a fashion show for a new young male designer and was put in the final look of the show.

“I walked down, and [fashion photographer] Mario Testino was in the crowd. He’s, like, ‘Who is that boy?’ Why is he walking so angry?’ And then, that started a buzz, and then [photographer] Bruce Weber booked me on an Abercrombie & Fitch shoot with the male actors the next week. So it was just sort of like I had that moment that just sort of just popped things off.”

It all sounded so easy and so exciting as Kutcher told the story. But Kutcher is such a great and enthusiastic storyteller practically everything he says sounds good. It turns out modeling wasn’t his idea of fun.

“It was a completely alien experience,” explained Kutcher. “I think that that’s why ... it makes really interesting fodder for a show model portfolio like this, because it’s such a foreign world ... I didn’t even know that guys modeled. I thought the Marlboro Man was a real cowboy.”

He said coming to New York from Iowa was a “daunting” experience.

“You’re surrounded by some of the most beautiful people you’ve ever seen and then some of the most eccentric people that you’ve ever seen, in the artists and the designers and the photographers,” said Kutcher. “So that fish-out-of-water story is completely out of water. It’s a fish-in-the-desert story. And I think that it’s created such a great landscape for the story-line for this show.”

“The other interesting thing is that the people that you’re around and the characters that we’re going to have in the show — they come from all over the world, so you’re not just experiencing the culture of a city. You’re not just experiencing the culture of an industry. You’re experiencing the culture of the world ... So it’s this amalgamation of these cultures in a really sexy world.”

Sexy, but not exactly exciting.

“It is tedious,” said Kutcher of his modeling career. “You stand around and have your picture taken. They don’t really want to hear your ideas. They don’t really want to know what you think. And you can’t be funny. I was always trying to like be funny and they were like ‘be sexy.’ How do you do that? I don’t know what that is ... I just wanted to be like many actors and once I became an actor I realized they didn’t want to hear your opinions [either].”

Of course, things worked out pretty well for Kutcher, a bankable star who is married to Demi Moore. But he believes becoming a model isn’t the best road to becoming an actor.

“I think it’s a very difficult one,” said Kutcher. “Had I known, I would have never even become a model, because a lot of my friends who are actually really good male models actors but are models end up getting stereotyped in that.”

Kutcher’s big TV break came when he was cast as lovable, dopey Michael Kelso on the Fox series, “That ’70s Show.” He met his manager through his modeling agent.

“She sent me for a call on some New York soap opera that I didn’t get a job on,” said Kutcher. “I couldn’t quite figure out for new male models how to make that dialogue work,” said Kutcher, who later auditioned for every character on the ‘ ’70s Show’ on tape before being cast as Kelso.

Kutcher expects his modeling experience to be part of storylines for the CW series, which has a cast that includes Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”) and supermodel Elle Macpherson.

He hopes “The Beautiful Life” will give viewers a more realistic view of the fashion industry than has been portrayed by all the reality shows set in the world.

“What has never really been portrayed are the ugly stories behind the beautiful people,” said Kutcher. “And there are ugly stories ... And a weird, superficial competition.

“You go into a casting and we look around and we all sort of look the same. I could never quite figure out why I got the job and he didn’t. But there is a reason. But only certain people have the eye to see that ... That ability to create an image and male model portfolio leads to a brand that people can relate to on a still frame or on a runway. That’s a craft. That’s a gift. Making a show that can celebrate that gift but also tell that sort of slightly more petty underlying story is a great juxtaposition that I think people will respond to.”

Fashion Beauty Professional On Runway Model

When Vaughn Glover was about 16, his mother asked him to model in a fashion show she was putting on at Greater Calvary Baptist Church. Glover hadn't thought much about the world of fashion or modeling before then, but he did it for his mom.

As it turned out, that was nothing compared to what Barbara Miller did for her son that day. On his mom's church runway, Glover took the first steps toward what would become, three decades later, a Cleveland fashion institution. Sunday night, July 19, Glover will present his 19th annual Waki Wear Productions fashion show and competition, an affair so glamorous, so sexy, so exuberant, it demands that we dust off the old fashion cliche and just call it fabulous. (C'mon. What would a fashion story be without the f-word?)

The show, which Glover started in 1991 after doing runway modeling for local designers, has been one of the few in the country devoted to black fashion designers.

"When I first started, I saw how hard it was for young designers to get into the industry," Glover said. "I wanted to be that person, the one to offer a steppingstone to black designers."

Almost two decades later, it's still difficult for black designers to break into the fashion world. The biggest names in black fashion belong to those who are already models tv, said Doni Wasson, a milliner who teaches at Virginia Marti College of Art and Design and has been one of Glover's judges from the beginning.

"There's Sean Jean [the label launched by Sean Combs, aka Diddy] and Baby Phat [the label of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons]," Wasson said. "But unless you have your own money, and you don't have to get a company or backers to support you, there has been a problem with black designers being accepted."

Glover agrees. Even so, he has decided to open his competition to designers and modeling of every race and nationality -- though this year, he did not get the word out early, and all of his designers are black.

"After all these years, it was time to advance it and make it a bigger competition and show," he said. "It was time to go global."

The rough economy has made it even harder for black designers, said Carl Trogden, a Baltimore designer and a two-time winner of Glover's competition. He does custom work for women who want one-of-a-kind pieces and has created his own couture line. But while he can usually count on a busy time during prom and wedding season, this year he says business has been "really, really slow."

Because he works in Baltimore, Trogden did not get much new business from Glover's show, though he said the beauty professional models often order clothes from him. But local designers often are able to attract new clients.

Kym Cunningham, a Clevelander who was the winner in 2006, gives Glover high marks. "His shows are very, very well-organized," she said. "Most of the people who go to Vaughn's shows follow the shows and the designers." The evening's main event is the design competition, dubbed Fashion Knockout, with the winners receiving cash prizes and high-end sewing machines from Baby Lock, one of Glover's national sponsors.

This year, the contest features the work of beauty professional eight designers, whose identities Glover keeps secret until the end of the show. He'd say only that four are from Cleveland and the others are from Atlanta, Chicago, Indianapolis and Philadelphia.

Glover follows that with Man-O-Man, his fourth annual all-male fashion showcase, a popular segment for the women in the audience. Unlike the quiet, judgmental fashion crowds at traditional New York fashion shows, Glover's audiences are vocal and enthusiastic and often show their appreciation with standing ovations.

"The audience is electrified because it is an up show," Wasson said. "Everyone is very well-mannered, but it's like being at a rock concert sometimes. They get involved with it."

Trogden, who will bring his couture collection to Cleveland Sunday for a showcase, is also the creator of what has become a perennial crowd pleaser: a show of his "Scandalous by Design" line, which Trogden describes as "a cross between Victoria's Secret and Frederick's of Hollywood." The line is frankly sexy, enough that it made Trogden's mother nervous for his soul.

Stepping into the tiny Live Girls! Theatre in Ballard, the first thing you notice (on a very warm night) is the air conditioning. The second thing? A lad of about 15 is taking your ticket. And much of the audience, along with all the male actors and stage hands, are teenagers, too.

That's expected from Seattle's Young Americans' Theatre Company.

What's not is the level of artistic ambition in this independent teen outfit, their eagerness to tackle a tough-minded drama like Deborah Gearing's "Burn" and their pride in handling all aspects of showbiz — acting and direction, ticket sales and publicity — with no adult guidance (or intervention).

This is the company's second summer season, and it's a bit smoother than last year's.

"We didn't know then how much work it would be to put on the show every night," admits young portfolio actress Emma Kelley, a senior at the high-school program Running Start, at Bellevue Community College.

"It was eye-opening," agrees actors and budding playwright Sam Tilles, who heads to Boston University this fall to be a freshman drama major.

But the teen crew (most of them veterans of school shows and private drama lessons) pulled together impressively. Their initial bill of one-acts (staged at Washington Ensemble Theatre) won respect from their peers and kudos from significant adults.

"My English teacher came and sat in the front row, which was a little disconcerting. But he loved the show," says Chelsea Taylor, director of this year's "Burn" and soon to be a freshman at Northwestern University.

For Tilles, the best compliment came from some classmates at Overlake School.

"These people were not into theater, not at all. But they came up after the show to say, this is really good. That felt great, because part of our mission is turning on more teens to theater."

The company also made good as money managers. Their 2008 show was underwritten by a $2,000 grant from University Prep. But thanks to strong ticket sales and more donations, they ended up with a $2,000 surplus.That cash has funded two productions at Live sexy model Girls! this summer: another bill of one-acts (which had a short run in July and included a piece by Tilles), and "Burn," a searing 90-minute drama that continues tonight through Sunday.

Taylor says they chose "Burn" because "it's got a lot of teenage roles, and a unique kind of writing that lets the characters be really honest. They aren't stereotypes."

The script delves into topics often deemed unsuitable for school shows — largely out of school officials' fear of "offending the parents, not the students," contends Kelley.
"Burn" might indeed be a hard sell in a high school, though it has no nudity and little profanity. Set in working-class England, the 2006 play zeros in on an alienated, skateboarding foster kid dubbed actors like Birdman (played broodingly by Tilles). He's taunted by his snarky peers but develops a fragile crush on Linda (Sydney Tucker), a girl so sexually traumatized, she rarely leaves her home.

Teen peer-pressure, sex, bullying, rape and suicide are considered here, in interactions, monologues and Greek-chorus-style commentary slashed with black humor and street poetry.

Despite keeping the play's English slang ("nicked" for stolen, "fancy" for like, etc.), the cast forgoes British accents. That's probably a wise move for actors not yet trained in the intricacies of foreign dialects. But otherwise they throw themselves into the amusing, disturbing piece, easily holding the audience's attention.

And what of the future of the Young Americans' Theatre Company? Some original members hope to stay involved, during summer college breaks. But they're also keen to perpetuate a now 20-member collective proudly termed "the only teenage male owned and operated theater company in Seattle."Their transition plan? "Interns," says Kelley. "We have four of them this year. And we're training them with the idea that when we go, they'll take over."

If Ashton Kutcher could do it all over again, he wouldn't become a model before becoming an actor.

"When someone first approached me and asked me if I wanted to be a model, I said to them, 'No, I want to be an actor,' " Kutcher said. "And they said, 'Well, male modeling is a great way to get into acting.' But had I known, I never even would have become a model.

"A lot of my friends who are actually really good actors but are models end up getting stereotyped in that. It's a very difficult segue, I would say."

Kutcher was at the Television Critics Association tour to promote his new series The Beautiful Life, which coincidentally is about young models.

Kutcher is not starring in the series, but rather is the co-executive producer. The Beautiful Life stars Corbin Bleu, Elle Macpherson, Sara Paxton and Mischa Barton, and it will air this fall on A and CW.

Of course, the transition from modelling to acting wasn't all that difficult for Kutcher, who in his first TV audition nailed the role of many actors like Michael Kelso in That '70s Show. It was Kutcher's earlier transition, from frustrated Iowa university student to New York model, that was the tough one.

"I was going to the University of Iowa School of Engineering, and it was finals, and I was 19, and somehow I managed to get into a bar and get a beer -- I can be persuasive when I need to be," Kutcher said.

"This woman came up to me and said, 'How old are you?' And I said, 'Just give me one second,' as I'm ordering my beer. Then I turned around and said, 'I'm 19.' She said, 'You should go in a good model search soon.' And I said, 'Do guys even do that?' Then we got into this conversation."

Kutcher explained that two weeks earlier he had reached the breaking point because he was overwhelmed by school and furious with his hated roommate, who had been having sex with a girl and wouldn't let Kutcher back in the room.

"So when an opportunity came to get out of Dodge, I jumped on it," he said. "I (entered a modelling contest) and won a trip to New York City. I went to New York and called home and just said, 'I'm not coming home.' "

At that point Kutcher's knowledge of the male modeling scene was, shall we say, limited.

"I thought the Marlboro Man was a real cowboy," Kutcher said. "That fish-out-of-water story was a fish-in-the-desert story. But I think it created such a great landscape for the storyline of this show."

At only 31, Kutcher already has become an accomplished producer, businessman and industry innovator. His companies and enterprises are endeavouring to stay ahead of the game as Internet and social-media with web technology changes and advances.

"I don't think I'll ever have to say, 'enough TV,' because I think (TV and Internet) eventually will merge into one," said Kutcher, who is married to 46-year-old actress Demi Moore.

"I don't think it's one or the other. I think it's both, and our goal is to be there when they merge and we'll already have an established understanding, awareness of that space."

So let's get this straight: Ashton Kutcher has been a highly paid actor, he's a budding producer, he's a multi-media force and he gets to see Demi Moore naked on a regular basis.

Runway modeling tips 1: Eyes

Your eyes should be focused straight ahead of you. Looking off into the distance. Just find something on the back wall and focus on it.

WARNING: There will be bright lights aimed at you! Do not try and focus on a light unless you want to go blind and walk right over the ledge of the runway, because all you can see is the after image of the light bulb.

Runway modeling tips 2: Chin

Your chin should be down slightly while runway modeling. The reason for this is because every one will be sitting, looking up at you.

There will be many photographers taking adult model pictures aimed up at you. So for your exposure aspect, you want to have good pictures taken of you so that they can be reused in magazines. You can then take these and add them to your portfolio.

Runway modeling tips 3: Shoulders

They shouldn't move much at all.

Your shoulders need to stay still as you walk. This can take a little getting used to but will not take long.

Runway modeling tips 4: Arms

A lot of models, when learning runway television modeling, tend to swing their arms way too much. Your arms should only swing as much as your body makes them.

With men and women it is a little bit different of a swing. The reason for the difference is how a man takes his steps. His step will cause his whole arm to swing more while a woman's steps will cause her arms to swing more from her elbows down.

Next time you watch a model runway modeling, watch and see how their lower arm is doing most of the swinging.

Tip for WOMEN: Concentrate on keeping your upper arm in close and somewhat tight to your body. This will ensure that only the bottom half swings.

MEN: All you need to do is just let them swing naturally. Don't assist them at all.

Monique Lhuillier’s Models Take a Detour Off the Runway

It was far from any regular afternoon at the Plaza Hotel’s Oak Room restaurant on Thursday, when a group of statuesque women wearing elegant cocktail dresses made of bursts of chiffon and ruched tulle sashayed to the bar area, whispering and giggling while occasionally pausing to strike a pose.

Watching guests swig champagne while examining the embroidery or draping of the dresses the striking women wore, designer Monique Lhuillier said she was glad she chose to unveil her Fall 2009 collection in this presentation format at a bar, instead of her usual runway show. Ms. Lhuillier’s event was among the first of several this season at New York’s fashion week in which designers will show their collections via presentations instead of their usual, expensive runway shows. “If this were a runway show, the clothes would go by so fast that you couldn’t see it,” Ms. Lhuillier said. “The bar was a perfect setting for this.”

While Ms. Lhuillier had said she wanted the event to feel like a cocktail party in which the female models are just like regular guests, it was hard to have that suspension of disbelief with photographers’ cameras flashing and makeup artists flitting about, touching up lipstick or powdering a nose.

The small collection of 12 ensembles that she showed, which she termed “Modern Ballet Russes,” featured strapless ballgowns and voluminous teadresses. In keeping with the ballet theme, Ms. Lhuillier paired each dress with black tights that had been artistically scratched, which top models wore on their arms as edgy “sleeves”–the juxtaposition of the flouncy organza with the shredded hosiery looked so natural in some ensembles it was hard to tell where the dress ended and stockings began.

It was true that it was a big plus to be able to stop a model in order to closely inspect the horse-hair trim that offered some punch to a simply cut slate-grey suit. At a regular fashion show, it would have been difficult to notice, much less appreciate, how much workmanship went into the dozens of cascading organza and chiffon flowers that were stitched onto a ballgown.

Deepak Chopra spoke during the event, which was emceed by Sean Yazbeck, the Brit-based-in-Miami who won the fifth season of NBC's The Apprentice. The ''philanthropic celebration of the beauty and resourcefulness of women everywhere'' -- also held in London, Paris, New York and Los Angeles -- was put on by Renata Mutis Black.

Three luxury lingerie designers gave couture pieces their U.S. debut in front of a black-tie crowd. First out was Carine Gilson's demure line done mostly in black and nude tones. Second was Fifi Chachnil's feather-accented pieces. The raciest looks were from the aptly named Agent Provocateur, and ranged from sexy nurse and French maid costumes to animal prints, spikes and body painting.

BANBAN, Saudi Arabia -- The contestants scampered down the runway, bleating at their admirers. Poets sang their praises in verse as the male-only audience appraised the competitors' physical beauty, right down to the length of their necks.

But instead of receiving roses and a tiara, it was off to the highest bidder for many finalists in the first Saudi beauty pageant featuring locally bred sheep.

The contest, a far cry from female models beauty pageants held in some Arab countries like Lebanon, offered an opportunity for breeders to do business and a rare outlet for entertainment in a country where the few recreational activities that exist are conducted under the strict glare of the religious police.

The goal of Thursday's competition was to encourage Saudis to breed for quality. Some of those who attended the event said Saudi sheep - known as Nejdi sheep - have markedly improved over the past decade because of the attention given to breeding them.

"The Nejdi sheep of today are much more beautiful than those of 10 years ago," said Salem al-Ghannami, a 37-year-old Emirati.

In the past few years, beauty pageants involving camels and goats - which, together with sheep, symbolize Bedouin lifestyle - have been held across the kingdom.

But senior members of the royal family have reportedly been upset because the contests turned into rancorous competitions between tribes over who has the most beautiful models wanted. To avoid such conflicts, the sheep pageant did not list the tribes who owned the animals.

On Thursday evening, some 4,000 men assembled on a lit-up stretch of desert just north of Riyadh covered with hundreds of carpets. The event was off-limits to women in keeping with strict Saudi rules that ban the sexes from mixing in public.

The men sat in armchairs around a tiny runway covered with red carpeting. The stench of dung filled the cool desert air as rams and ewes were put on display following a fireworks show and a competition for the best poem.

The model was pretty exhausted, as she had been constantly working for long days.

The 19-year-old model agents Kathy Ward of Chic Models revealed that the corset was incredibly tight, which made the model lose her composure.
"As she was coming off the catwalk she began to take tiny steps as she felt she was going to faint and she did just as she came off,'' The Daily Telegraph quoted Mrs Ward, as saying.

How to Be a Nude Art Model?

Modeling nude for an artist is much more difficult than it may seem. It is not a profession for the physically weak, or the self-conscious for all female models. While being comfortable in your own body is not necessarily a prerequisite, it certainly helps!

1. Prepare a resume. Include any previous modeling experience, performances, art schooling, dance, yoga, or other activity you have done which would benefit an artist model.

2. Contact your local art school or college to see if they are hiring art female models. You can start with the art department, but ask female models for all types of modeling classes.

3. Before you leave for your session, shower and apply lotion so that you won't offend the artist with your body odor and will have nice smooth skin. Lotion also soothes dry skin which could otherwise cause you to scratch an itch while posing. Wear minimal jewelry unless otherwise requested to modeling photographers for it.

4. Upon arrival, you will be expected to change (remove all of your clothing) and put on your robe and slippers. A private change room will likely be provided.

5. Step up onto the model's area and place your wrist watch where you will be able to view it. Remove your slippers and place them neatly to one side.

6. Remove your robe. It is hygienic and highly recommended that you place your robe beneath your bottom for sitting poses for teen modeling. Some artists even enjoy drawing the additional "drapery".

You may be the most beautiful 5’2” goddess around, but at 5’2”, your gorgeous face will not be enough to land a gig on designer runways during fashion week. Always be honest and realistic about your chances in modeling photographers. The last thing you want to do is put a lot of time and effort into something that is non-attainable regardless of your efforts.
